‘Disco Elysium’: Darkly hilarious video game about failed revolutions and enduring hope

Released in 2019 and later expanded as "Disco Elysium: The Final Cut," this role-playing video game stands apart from anything else in the genre. It is not defined by sword fights or magic spells, but by a deep and unusual focus on ideology. The game was created by Estonian writer Robert Kurvitz, a self-described Marxist-Leninist, and its fictional world draws unique inspiration from the political and social conditions of the post-Soviet Baltic states.

Players step into the shoes of a detective who has lost his memory to a massive drinking binge. He wakes up in a rundown hotel room in the rain-soaked district of Martinaise. The city of Revachol is a place where a failed communist revolution still hangs in the air like fog. The game's humor is dark and often absurd, with the player's own internal thoughts arguing with each other. One voice might be a raving fascist, another a suicidal romantic, and a third a hard-nosed communist. The player must navigate these warring parts of their own mind to solve a murder.

What makes Disco Elysium special is its deep sadness and its stubborn hope. The world is broken, full of people who have lost their faith in big ideas. Yet the game never becomes cynical. It asks hard questions about what it means to believe in something after all the revolutions have failed. It suggests that hope is not about winning, but about continuing to care. The writing is sharp, literary, and deeply human. It is a game that makes you laugh at the absurdity of existence, and then quietly reminds you that trying to be a good person is still worth the effort.
