Final Fantasy XIV Online Set to Arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 Alongside New Expansion, Evercold

Square Enix has officially announced that its critically acclaimed massively multiplayer online role-playing game, Final Fantasy XIV Online, will be making its way to the Nintendo Switch 2 later this year. The news was delivered alongside the reveal of a brand-new expansion titled Evercold, which promises to introduce a frozen, uncharted continent to the game’s sprawling world of Hydaelyn.

The Switch 2 port marks a significant milestone for the MMO, which has previously been available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. While specific technical details remain under wraps, Square Enix confirmed that the Switch 2 version will support cross-platform play, allowing players to adventure alongside friends regardless of their chosen system. The port is expected to launch simultaneously with the Evercold expansion, though exact release dates for both have yet to be announced.

Evercold takes players to the Glacial Expanse, a region locked in perpetual winter and shrouded in ancient mysteries. The expansion will introduce new jobs, including the Cryomancer, a magical DPS role that harnesses the power of ice and frost. Additionally, a new playable race, the Hrothgar variant known as the Snowmane, will be available, offering players a fur-covered, cold-adapted appearance. The story arc is said to delve into the origins of the Ascians and the lingering threat of a slumbering primal tied to the frozen wastes.

Director and producer Naoki Yoshida expressed excitement about bringing the game to a wider audience, stating that the team has optimized the experience for the Switch 2’s hardware capabilities. He also hinted at exclusive cosmetic items for players who purchase the Switch 2 version, though details remain scarce.

With Final Fantasy XIV continuing to thrive nearly a decade after its relaunch, the addition of the Switch 2 and the Evercold expansion signals Square Enix’s commitment to expanding the game’s reach and narrative depth. Fans can expect more information in the coming months as the launch window approaches.
