A southside store is cashing in on a major cultural shift, as Gen Z and millennial shoppers flock back to tangible entertainment. OldSchool Outpost has become a local hub for vintage game consoles, classic cartridges, and cult-favorite movies on DVD and Blu-ray. The shop, packed floor-to-ceiling with retro gear, is seeing a surge in business from younger customers who grew up with streaming but now crave the ownership and nostalgia of physical media.
Store owner Mark Jensen says the trend is no accident. "People are tired of subscriptions and disappearing content," he explains. "They want something they can hold, trade, and keep forever." The shelves are lined with everything from original Nintendo and Sega systems to VHS tapes of 80s horror films. The most popular items include PlayStation 2 games and rare collector's editions of movies that never got a proper digital release.
The resurgence is fueled by a desire for authenticity in an increasingly digital world. For many, browsing the aisles of OldSchool Outpost is a tactile experience that streaming services cannot replicate. Customers often spend hours digging through bins for hidden gems, sharing tips on which titles hold their value. The store also hosts weekend tournaments for classic fighting games, drawing a crowd that spans from teens to forty-somethings.
Jensen notes that the business is not just about nostalgia. "It's about preserving a piece of culture," he says. "These games and movies are art, and people want to make sure they don't vanish into a server somewhere." As demand grows, OldSchool Outpost is expanding its inventory, adding laser discs and older PC game boxes to meet the appetite for physical media in a digital age.
