The development team behind the upcoming historical action game "1666: Amsterdam" has acknowledged that its reveal trailer and promotional materials contained AI-generated imagery, sparking backlash from players and industry peers. The studio, which includes over a dozen experienced artists, released a statement saying, "We are actively reviewing the assets in question."
The controversy began when eagle-eyed viewers noticed visual inconsistencies in the trailer, including distorted architecture and unnatural character details typical of AI image generation. The game, set in 17th-century Amsterdam, was pitched as a passion project from a veteran team. However, the use of AI art in its debut marketing has raised questions about the studio's creative integrity.
Critics argue that a team boasting "talented and experienced artists" should not rely on AI for key promotional material. Supporters of the technology note that AI can be a useful tool for concept art, but many feel its use in a public reveal undermines the human artistry the team claims to value.
The studio has not specified which assets were AI-generated or how they plan to address the issue. The game's release date remains unannounced.
