Out of Words pulled at my heartstrings

Out of Words pulled at my heartstrings

I already had a soft spot for "Out of Words." The game's quiet, melancholic puzzle design had stuck with me long after I put down the controller. But speaking with its director and founder, Johan Oettinger, made me fall for it all over again. Oettinger is not a man who talks about mechanics or market trends. He talks about emotion, about the spaces between words, and about the loneliness of trying to communicate.

He explained that the game was born from a very personal place. It is not about finding the right vocabulary or solving a clever riddle. It is about the frustration of being misunderstood, and the relief of finally being seen. Every level, he told me, is designed to make you feel a specific kind of quiet ache. You are not just moving blocks or rearranging letters. You are trying to reach someone, and failing, and trying again.

What struck me most was his honesty about the creative process. He admitted that many of the game's most touching moments came from his own failures in real life. He did not try to hide the pain behind clever metaphors. He just put it into the game, raw and simple. That vulnerability is what makes "Out of Words" feel less like a game and more like a conversation with an old friend who finally tells you the truth.

In an industry full of loud explosions and constant action, Oettinger has made something quiet. And in that quiet, he found a voice that speaks louder than most.
