Better Than Dead: A Hyper-Realistic And Janky Bodycam FPS

Better Than Dead: A Hyper-Realistic And Janky Bodycam FPS

Better Than Dead is a short, messy, and somewhat flawed first-person shooter that manages to stand out from the crowd thanks to its unique visual style and clunky, deliberate gameplay. Unlike most modern shooters that prioritize fast, fluid movement, this game forces players into a slow, tense pace that mimics the look and feel of a real bodycam recording.

The visual presentation is the main draw. The game uses a grainy, washed-out color palette with heavy lens distortion, fisheye effects, and realistic lighting. It looks less like a video game and more like a low-quality police evidence tape. This hyper-realism extends to the sound design, where distant gunshots echo with a hollow, muffled quality.

However, the realism comes at a cost. The controls are intentionally janky. Your character moves with a heavy, sluggish weight. Aiming down sights is slow, and the recoil is punishing. The game does not hold your hand. There are no on-screen markers, no health bars, and no ammo counters. You have to keep track of your magazine by listening to the click of an empty chamber.

The campaign is very short, clocking in at under an hour. The story is minimal, placing you in a series of grim, abandoned environments. The enemy AI is unpredictable, sometimes acting stupid and other times landing a perfect shot from across the map. This inconsistency adds to the overall feeling of a janky, unpolished experience.

Despite its flaws, Better Than Dead offers something genuinely different. It is not a polished blockbuster. It is a rough, experimental project that prioritizes atmosphere and a specific, gritty aesthetic over smooth gameplay. For players tired of arcade-style shooters, this messy and realistic title is a refreshing, if frustrating, change of pace.
