Living The Curious Life: A Conversation with Composer Takeshi Furukawa

Takeshi Furukawa does not write music the way most people do. He does not sit at a piano and wait for a melody to fall out. Instead, he follows a thread of curiosity, pulling at it until it leads him somewhere unexpected. That approach has shaped his career, from indie games to film scores, and it is the reason his lushly orchestrated pieces feel so alive.

In a recent conversation, Furukawa talked about the importance of staying open. He said that too many composers try to force a sound or chase a trend. He prefers the opposite. He starts with a question, often a simple one, like what would this character hear if they were alone in a forest at night. Then he builds a world around that answer. His process involves a lot of sketching, recording odd sounds, and layering strings with textures that are not traditionally musical. The result is something that feels both grand and intimate, like a memory you cannot quite place.

Furukawa also spoke about the pressure of deadlines and the temptation to play it safe. He admitted that he has thrown away entire movements because they felt too easy. For him, the goal is not to impress with technical skill but to create a genuine emotional response. He wants the listener to lean in, to feel a shift in their chest, to wonder what happens next. That is the curious life he lives, and it is one he hopes to keep exploring for a long time.
