A lead developer from Digital Extremes, the studio behind the long-running free-to-play shooter Warframe, has spoken out about the recent conclusion of major content updates for Destiny 2. Rather than viewing Bungie's struggles as a victory for their own game, the developer described the situation as "heartbreaking" and emphasized that the industry should not celebrate a competitor's decline.
In a recent interview, the Warframe team member reflected on the current state of the live-service shooter market. They noted that while Warframe and Destiny 2 have often been seen as rivals, a healthy ecosystem requires multiple strong players. "A game is healthy when you have competitors," the developer stated, explaining that the end of Destiny 2's regular seasonal content cycle was not a moment of triumph for their studio.
The comments come after Bungie announced significant layoffs and a shift away from the annual expansion model for Destiny 2. The Warframe developer expressed genuine sadness for the players and developers affected, calling the situation "heartbreaking." They argued that the loss of a major title like Destiny 2 from the active content rotation leaves a gap that no single game can easily fill.
The developer also pushed back against the idea of a "console war" mentality in the live-service space. They said that seeing a fellow long-running game struggle is a warning sign for the entire genre, not a reason to gloat. The sentiment underscores a broader industry concern about sustainability and player burnout, as even the biggest names in the genre face challenges in keeping their communities engaged year after year.
